Size questions are the most common questions we hear from boutique owners. "Is a 52 the same as a large?" "Why do the trousers of a 50 fit a 44?" "Which sizes should I order more of?" This guide answers them in one place: how European suit sizes work, what the "drop" means, how to convert to other systems, and how to use all of it when you plan your wholesale orders.
Everything below applies to the slim-fit suits most Istanbul brands produce, including our own collections in sizes 46–58.
How European suit sizes work
European (and Italian-style) suit sizes are based on a simple rule: the size number is half of the chest circumference in centimetres. A size 50 jacket is cut for a chest of about 100 cm; a size 54 for about 108 cm.
The measurement refers to the body, not the garment. You measure around the fullest part of the chest, under the arms, with the tape level and relaxed. The jacket itself will be a little larger to allow for movement — how much larger depends on the cut. A slim-fit jacket has less ease than a classic or regular fit.
Because the rule is so simple, it is easy to estimate a customer's size: measure the chest, divide by two, and round to the nearest even number.
What "drop" means
The drop is the difference between the jacket size and the trouser size in a suit. It tells you how much narrower the trousers are compared to the jacket.
- Drop 6 is the most common for modern slim-fit suits. A size 50 jacket comes with size 44 trousers.
- Drop 7 and drop 8 are even more athletic, for customers with broad shoulders and a narrow waist.
- Drop 4 is a fuller, classic cut, for customers with a larger waist relative to the chest.
In centimetres, every point of drop is 2 cm of waist circumference. So in a drop 6 suit, the trouser waist is 12 cm smaller than the chest. Our slim-fit collections are cut on a drop 6 pattern, which suits the widest range of customers in most markets.
Size chart: sizes 46–58 (drop 6)
The table below shows body measurements for a drop 6 slim-fit suit. Values are for the body, in centimetres, and are a guide — always compare with the specific model.
| Jacket size | Chest (cm) | Waist (cm) | Trouser size | Typical height (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 46 | 92 | 80 | 40 | 170–176 |
| 48 | 96 | 84 | 42 | 172–178 |
| 50 | 100 | 88 | 44 | 174–180 |
| 52 | 104 | 92 | 46 | 176–182 |
| 54 | 108 | 96 | 48 | 178–184 |
| 56 | 112 | 100 | 50 | 180–186 |
| 58 | 116 | 104 | 52 | 180–188 |
Height ranges are for a regular length. Many brands also offer short and long fittings for some models; ask your supplier which lengths are available.
Converting European sizes to US, UK and Russian sizes
If your customers are used to another system, use this conversion. US and UK jacket sizes are based on chest circumference in inches.
| EU / IT | Russia | US / UK | Letter size (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 46 | 46 | 36 | XS |
| 48 | 48 | 38 | S |
| 50 | 50 | 40 | M |
| 52 | 52 | 42 | L |
| 54 | 54 | 44 | XL |
| 56 | 56 | 46 | XXL |
| 58 | 58 | 48 | 3XL |
Russian sizes are the same as European sizes for jackets, which makes life easy for buyers in Russia, Kazakhstan and much of the CIS. Letter sizes are only approximate: they vary a lot between brands and are best avoided when ordering tailored clothing.
How to measure a customer correctly
If you want to advise customers well, or check your stock against a specific person, take these measurements:
- Chest: around the fullest part of the chest, under the arms, tape horizontal. Divide by two for the European size.
- Waist (for trousers): around the natural waist where the trousers will sit, usually just above the hip bones.
- Shoulder width: from the end of one shoulder bone to the other, across the back. This tells you whether a jacket will sit cleanly.
- Sleeve length: from the shoulder point to the wrist bone, arm relaxed.
- Height: to choose between regular and long fittings where available.
When the chest and waist point to different drops, start with the jacket — it is harder to alter. Trousers can usually be taken in or let out at the waist by a local tailor.
How a slim fit should look
A well-fitting slim suit should:
- sit flat on the shoulders, with no dent below the shoulder seam,
- close on the top button without the fabric pulling into an "X" shape,
- show about 1–1.5 cm of shirt cuff below the jacket sleeve,
- end around the middle of the seat, covering most of it,
- have trousers that touch the shoe lightly, with little or no break.
If a customer is between two sizes in a slim fit, the larger size with a small alteration is usually the better choice.
Planning size runs for your boutique
Wholesale suits are normally sold in size runs — one piece of each size from 48 to 58 (six pieces), sometimes with a 46 added. We explain how runs, minimums and ordering work in our guide to buying wholesale suits from Turkey.
Runs give you a balanced spread, but your customers are not spread evenly. A few tips from what we see in practice:
- The middle sizes move first. In most markets 50, 52 and 54 sell fastest. When a model performs well, reorder another full run rather than single sizes — that is how wholesale works, and it keeps the middle sizes in stock.
- Know your market. Buyers from some regions tell us their customers are taller and broader on average and that 54–58 move better; others find 46–50 more important. Add a 46 where it is available if your customers are smaller.
- Track sell-through by size. After the first season you will know your own curve, and you can choose models that are available in the sizes you sell most.
- Use blazers to fill gaps. Jackets sold on their own are a flexible way to serve customers whose chest and waist do not fit a standard drop.
Common sizing mistakes
- Ordering by letter size. "L" means different things at different brands. Order by European size.
- Ignoring the drop. A customer with a large waist relative to the chest will struggle in a drop 7 or 8 cut. Check the drop before ordering for a specific customer.
- Confusing body and garment measurements. The size chart is for the body. If you measure a finished jacket, it will be larger.
- Choosing too small for "slim". Slim fit is already close to the body; sizing down usually ends in pulled buttons and a short sleeve.
